There is so much that goes into making a bunad that is can be hard to know where to start! Take a look through our FAQ and we'll be here when you're ready to embark on your bunad journey.
Please reach out via our contact page if you cannot find an answer to your question.
There are no hard and fast rules when picking what bunad to wear. In Norway people tend to pick a bunad for a region their family is from. However, it is appropriate to have a bunad from any place you have strong ties to. All that matters is that you pick a bunad that you feel a connection to.
All of our fabrics, kits, and accessories are imported directly from Norway. Sewing a bunad is a labor and material intensive endeavor that craftspeople charge accordingly for in Norway. In order to not undervalue the hard work of those craftspeople our prices are in line with Norwegian pricing for bunad fabric, kits, and accessories.
The cost of sewing your bunad will heavily depend on which bunad you select. Bunads without embroidery will be significantly cheaper than those with embroidery. This is because embroidered bunads must be ordered as kits from bunad retailers in Norway. Pricing for these embroidery kits begins at around $1500. Bunads without embroidery can frequently be made from fabric we have in stock. Pricing varies by material. Feel free to reach out for a more specific quote!
Should you choose an embroidered bunad, your material will be delivered to you as a kit. These kits are made in house by local bunad stores in Norway where the material is measured and the embroidery design is transferred by hand. These kits contain the wool that is to be embroidered and the wool embroidery thread only. Any supplemental fabrics such as linings will need to be purchased separately.
A bunad embroidery kit does not have full instructions on the embroidering and construction of a bunad. Most often you will receive a photo of the finished embroidery design for you to emulate and a page of scant instructions in Norwegian. Should you choose to make your own embroidered bunad it is highly recommended that you take two or three instructional classes with us here at the Spokane studio.
Since all of our fabrics, accessories, and kits are sourced from Norway there can be a considerable wait when ordering supplies for your bunad project. In stock fabrics and accessories will be shipped ASAP. All bunad kits are made to order in Norway and therefore can take several months to arrive in the US. Any sølje or accessories not listed for sale on our website can be custom ordered but may be subject to long wait times due to international shipping and customs. We understand that the uncertainty in the timeline can be frustrating. We will do our best to update you every step of the way!
A bunad is a lifelong garment which means that sometimes it could use a little adjusting. At this moment in time we are unable to do alteration work for clients. If you have a bunad that needs altering we recommend that you join us for a class or reach out to see if we know of someone who does bunad alterations in your area.
Our current focus is providing quality materials and education. We are unable to fulfill any custom sewing requests at this time. Please feel free to contact us for our list of US based seamstresses that are currently taking bunad commissions.
A completed bunad requires a bunad shirt, apron, shoes, and silver pins (sølje) that is appropriate for your bunad. Other accessories such as purses and silk scarves will bring your bunad together! You can find pricing for some of these accessories on our online store. And remember that it is okay to add these accessories over time. Many Norwegian girls begin with just their bunad dress, shoes, and shirt and receive the rest as gifts for life events over time.
