Learn to make your bunad
Four-day, in-person bunad classes at Bunad Creations Studio in Greenacres, Washington. Small groups, full days, your own bunad project — guided by Gina Nylund, a certified Bunadtilvirker trained in Norway.
What happens in a class
Each class meets for four consecutive days, nine to five, at the Bunad Creations Studio in Greenacres, Washington. You bring your bunad project — whatever stage it is at — and we work on it together. Some students arrive with fabric and a plan; others arrive partway through their bodice; others are deep into the embroidery and need an experienced eye over their shoulder. All are welcome.
The class is small on purpose. Four to six students per session means I can sit beside each of you, answer the questions only experience can answer, and watch the work come together stitch by stitch. Bunadmaking is not something you can learn from a video — there is a reason it is taught in person in Norway, and that is the same reason it is taught in person here.
You will leave with significant progress on your bunad, the techniques to keep going at home, and a clear understanding of what comes next. Many of my students return for a second class, and a third. The work is patient work.
Intermediate sewing skills are required. You should be comfortable using a sewing machine, reading a pattern, and handling fine fabric. You do not need any prior bunad-specific experience — that is what the class is for.
What's included — and what to bring
The class fee covers four full days of instruction, nine to five each day, in a small group of four to six students, with your own bunad project as the focus.
You bring your bunad project at whatever stage it is at, along with the materials, fabric, silver, embroidery thread, and notions for it. If you are not yet sure what bunad to make or where to begin, get in touch before booking — I will help you make a plan and source what you need.
Students travel from across the United States to attend. Greenacres is in the Spokane area; Spokane International Airport (GEG) is the closest. Local hotels and B&Bs are within a short drive.

Common questions
Do I need to know which bunad I want to make before signing up?
No — but the earlier you start choosing, the better. Most bunads are tied to a specific region of Norway. If you know where your family is from, that is usually where to begin. Get in touch before booking and I will help you choose.
Can I take a class as a complete beginner to sewing?
Not quite — you should be a confident intermediate sewer first. Bunadmaking involves fine fabric, dense embroidery, and precise construction, and the class is not designed to teach basic sewing. If you are newer to sewing, build up your skills first — and then come.
How many classes does it take to finish a bunad?
It varies. A motivated student working between classes can complete a bunad over two to three classes; others take longer. Bunadmaking is patient work. Most students return for at least one additional class.
I live far from Washington. Is it worth the trip?
Students travel from across the United States to attend. There are very few certified Bunadtilvirkere working in America, and Bunad Creations is the only place in the country where you can take a multi-day class in person. Most students who come, come back.
